<description>Looks like Commissioner Copps is still on the case. Dow Jones reports:

Michael Copps, a Democratic member of the Federal Communications Commission, said Thursday he was concerned that the worsening economy might lead to private-equity companies breaking up or shutting down media companies they have acquired recently.

Copps has for months cautioned against the rising tide of publicly traded media companies being taken private. He has urged the FCC to launch an investigation into these transactions.

Increasingly, he has argued, the ownership structure of these companies is becoming unclear, which would leave the FCC unable to take action against the owners of regulated companies in the event that something goes wrong.

Thursday, he repeated these concerns, saying that, in the face of deteriorating economic conditions, the role of private equity in owning media assets must be closely examined and monitored.

"There's been a whole raft (of acquisitions) involving private equity in recent years and I think we need to ask questions about them," said Copps.

Copps said he had already seen one telecommunications bubble burst in his time at the FCC in 2001 and he didn't want to see another one.
