One example: Sen. Lindsey Graham's comment -- made in response to Sotomayor's "wise Latina" remark from 2001 -- that "being an average, every-day white guy ... that does not exactly make me feel good hearing a sitting judge say that." According to Sen. Graham's logic, if he is an every-day white guy, than anyone else -- say, a Latina woman -- is not "every-day" or normal, but instead is different, exotic, i.e., not what you see every day. As if Sotomayor is a crazy Latina alien dropping in on white people from outer space, or worse, the Bronx. The racism surrounding Sotomayor’s nomination is harder to pick out, but it’s there too.
